About Judge James T. Giles, as published in the Philadelphia Business Journal

Giles was chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania from 1999 to 2006 and served on the bench for a total of nearly three decades from 1980 to 2008. He was nominated by President Jimmy Carter and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1979.

Prior to his judgeship, the Yale Law School alum had a long career at what was then known as Pepper Hamilton, including as a partner in the firm’s labor department. Giles was the first African-American lawyer to join the firm and was the first person of color elected to partnership.

Following his retirement from the court in 2008, Giles returned to Pepper Hamilton, where he was of counsel for nearly a decade. In 2018, he took up the same role at Philadelphia-based Am Law 100 firm Blank Rome. There, his focuses include alternative dispute resolution; pretrial, trial and appellate work related to employment; and advocacy training, moot arguments and continuing legal education programs. He is also active in the firm’s pro bono work and its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
